Painting a stairwell, repairing a high window or fitting a light above a landing can put you in an awkward position fast. A combination ladder for stairs is built to give you stable access where a standard step ladder leaves one side hanging in mid-air. Used correctly, it can make split-level work far safer and more practical. Used in the wrong configuration, it creates a serious fall risk.

The key is not simply owning a multi-purpose ladder. You need a model designed and approved for stair use, the right working height, firm footing and enough room to set it up exactly as the manufacturer instructs. Here is what to check before taking a ladder into a stairwell.

Can a combination ladder be used on stairs?

Some combination ladders are designed to adapt into several working positions, including an A-frame or stairwell configuration. Their hinged sections can be set at different heights, allowing the ladder to stand level while each side rests securely on a different stair tread or landing.

That versatility makes them useful for decorators, electricians, maintenance teams and serious DIY users working above internal staircases. Instead of balancing a conventional ladder on loose timber blocks, boxes or makeshift platforms, you use a purpose-built arrangement with locking hinges and correctly positioned feet.

However, not every folding, telescopic or extension ladder is safe for this job. Never assume that a ladder with multiple sections can be used unevenly. Check the instruction manual and product specification for an approved stair configuration. If it is not expressly permitted by the manufacturer, keep it off the stairs.

A combination ladder also needs enough space around it. Narrow turns, low ceilings, doors that open into the working area and handrails can all limit where the ladder can stand safely.

What makes a stair ladder setup safe?

A safe setup starts with the ladder itself. It should be in sound condition, with clean non-slip feet, undamaged stiles, secure rivets and hinges that lock positively. If a hinge does not fully engage or a locking pin is bent, take the ladder out of service until it has been inspected or replaced.

The staircase matters just as much. Each foot must sit fully and squarely on a firm tread or landing. Avoid stairs with loose carpeting, wet surfaces, polished finishes that reduce grip, damaged nosings or clutter. A stair tread that cannot support the foot evenly is not a suitable base.

You must also work within the ladder's stated maximum load. This includes your body weight, clothing, tools and any materials you carry. A heavy toolbox, cable drum or paint kettle can quickly turn an otherwise safe working position into an overloaded one. Keep what you carry to a minimum and use a tool belt or hoist materials separately where practical.

The ladder must be level in its approved position

The purpose of a stair configuration is to create a level, stable climbing surface. Do not try to achieve this by placing a standard ladder with one leg on a higher step, or by packing out a foot with timber, paving slabs or offcuts. Improvised packing can shift under load and prevents the ladder feet from gripping as designed.

A proper combination ladder uses its own approved adjustment positions. Follow the manufacturer’s sequence for changing section height, fitting any stabiliser bar and locking the hinges. If the instructions are unclear, stop and check before climbing.

Choosing the right combination ladder for stairs

Start with the height of the job, not the highest point in the stairwell. You need to reach the work comfortably without standing on the top rungs, stretching sideways or leaning out past the stiles. For painting a wall above a half landing, a lower configuration may be safer than a ladder extended to its maximum length.

Look at the ladder’s usable height in its stairwell configuration. A combination ladder may offer a different working height when used as an A-frame than when used as an extension ladder. Product dimensions should be read for the exact mode you intend to use.

Weight and storage are practical considerations too. Aluminium combination ladders are strong, corrosion-resistant and easier to carry through a property than heavier alternatives. If you work around electrical installations, choose a suitable non-conductive fibreglass ladder rather than aluminium. Electricians should not rely on a metal ladder where there is a risk of contact with live equipment.

For regular trade use, choose a ladder made for frequent work, with a clear duty rating, strong locking hardware and a stable base. For occasional household maintenance, compact folded dimensions may matter more, but safety features should never be treated as optional.

Safe setup for a combination ladder on stairs

Take time over setup. Most ladder incidents happen because somebody is rushing to reach a quick job, not because the task was especially difficult.

1. Read the approved configuration first. Set the ladder on a flat area before taking it onto the stairs if you need to understand the hinge positions. Confirm that the model is specifically approved for uneven or stair use.

2. Clear and inspect the staircase. Remove mats, tools, trailing leads and anything that could prevent a foot sitting flat. Check both contact points for damage, moisture and loose finishes.

3. Position both sides securely. Place the ladder only where its feet make full contact with the stair treads or landing. Make sure the ladder is level in the manufacturer-approved arrangement, with no rocking or movement.

4. Lock every hinge and spreader. Visually check each locking point before climbing. Do not rely on a click alone if the mechanism has a visible lock indicator or pin that must be engaged.

5. Secure the ladder where required. If the chosen mode needs a top restraint, tie or other securing method, fit it before use. A second competent person can help steady the ladder while it is being positioned, but they are not a substitute for correct securing.

6. Climb and work with control. Face the ladder, keep three points of contact when climbing and keep your belt buckle between the stiles. Climb down to reposition rather than reaching sideways. Never overreach to save a few minutes.

If the ladder is being used in a leaning configuration rather than as an A-frame, follow the manufacturer’s specified angle. The familiar 1-in-4 rule may apply to an approved leaning ladder, but it does not override the product manual or make an unsuitable stair setup safe.

When a stair combination ladder is the right tool

A combination ladder earns its place when access is awkward but the task is short, controlled and light enough to complete safely. Typical jobs include cutting in above a stairwell, changing a high-level fitting, installing a smoke alarm, repairing plaster around a landing or cleaning an internal high window.

It is particularly useful when you need to move through a house or site without the bulk of a scaffold tower. Folded combination ladders are easier to transport in a van, store in a workshop or carry through a property than a large platform system.

That does not make it the best choice for every task. If you will be working in one position for a long period, using two hands continuously, handling bulky materials or applying force with power tools, a properly selected work platform or scaffold system may be the safer and more productive option.

Know when to choose another access solution

Stop and reassess if the stairwell is too narrow for secure footing, the required reach puts you near the top of the ladder, or the job needs repeated side-to-side movement. The same applies where other people may use the staircase below you. Barrier off the area where possible and prevent access while work is underway.

Do not use a ladder over open stair voids, on winding steps that cannot support the feet correctly, or where a door can be opened into the ladder. A mobile tower, podium step or purpose-built stairwell platform may take longer to set up, but it gives you a larger working area and better protection for extended jobs.

For commercial work, make the choice as part of your working-at-height risk assessment. The safest access equipment is the one that lets the task be completed without overreaching, rushing or improvising.

Keep your ladder ready for the next job

After use, wipe off paint, plaster dust, mud and moisture, especially around hinges and locking points. Store the ladder in a dry place where it will not be knocked by vehicles, dropped materials or other equipment. Before each job, give it a quick visual check. A few seconds spent inspecting feet, stiles and locks is worth far more than discovering a fault halfway up a stairwell.

A combination ladder for stairs is a practical bit of kit for difficult access work, but only when its approved configuration matches the space and the task. If the setup does not feel solid from the floor, do not climb it. Choose the safer access method and get the job done properly.
