Match the conveyor type to the load

The trade-off is that they need a stable surface and careful positioning so the line does not shift or sag under load.
For irregular items, assess the job honestly. Long materials, cylinders, loose components and very heavy machinery may need a pallet lorry, lift table, sack lorry or purpose-built handling solution instead. Forcing unsuitable goods onto a conveyor creates stoppages and can damage both the load and the equipment.
Check capacity across the whole loading route
Do not select only by a headline maximum capacity. Look at the weight of individual items, the number of items likely to be on the conveyor at one time and the load rating of every section. A line can be overloaded even when each carton is within the stated limit.
Consider peak days rather than average days. If your normal parcel weighs 12 kg but occasional trade orders include 35 kg boxes of fittings, the equipment and process must safely accommodate those heavier loads. The same applies to bulky items that spread weight unevenly across the rollers.
Keep in mind that a conveyor only transfers goods. It does not lift them from a pallet or raise them to the correct loading height. If staff are still bending to collect cartons from floor level, pair the conveyor with a suitable pallet lorry or hydraulic lift table where appropriate. A better start height reduces unnecessary handling before the item even reaches the van.
Measure the van and the working area
Measure the loading height at the rear of each vehicle, including the threshold and any ramp arrangement. The conveyor should meet the vehicle at a sensible height, with enough adjustment to allow for different vans, tyre pressures and yard gradients. A steep angle may make cartons run too quickly, while an uphill route creates unnecessary effort and can cause goods to roll back.
Also measure the clear path from stock to vehicle. Account for door swings, pedestrian walkways, fire exits, racking, shutters and turning space for pallet lorries. The aim is not to fill every inch of the bay. Operators need room to stand safely at both ends and to step away if an item becomes unstable.
Van interiors matter too. A conveyor may reach the threshold well but leave a large gap to the stacking position. For short-wheelbase vans, that may be manageable. For long-wheelbase vans loaded deep to the bulkhead, plan how goods will move beyond the rear doors without repeated overreaching.
Set up the loading process, not just the equipment
A good conveyor performs best when the whole loading sequence is clear. Decide where stock is presented, who feeds the conveyor, who receives goods in the vehicle and where completed paperwork or scans are handled. If operators must cross the conveyor repeatedly to collect labels or packing materials, the process needs rearranging.
Before each shift, check four essentials:
- The conveyor is on firm, level ground with legs, brakes and supports correctly positioned.
- Rollers, belts and guards are clean, undamaged and free from loose film, straps or debris.
- The route is clear of people, pallet lorries and waste packaging.
- The load is stable, within capacity and suitable for the conveyor surface.
For gravity systems, control the speed of travel. A small change in slope can make a major difference, especially with heavier cartons. The person at the van end should never be expected to catch a fast-moving load. Where needed, use suitable stops or arrange the layout so items arrive one at a time.
Think about storage, weather and daily upkeep
Many businesses need the conveyor only at dispatch times, then need their floor space back. If that is your situation, look for a design that stores compactly and can be moved safely without excessive lifting. Wheels and locking castors are useful, but only if they are strong enough for the working load and properly secured before use.
Outdoor loading adds another consideration. Rain, grit and uneven tarmac can affect footing, roller movement and package condition. Where possible, load under cover or create a protected transfer area. If equipment is used outside, inspect it more frequently for corrosion, contamination and damage from vehicle movements.
A straightforward maintenance routine pays for itself. Remove debris after use, check rollers or belts for smooth operation, inspect fixings and supports, and deal with bent sections before they worsen. Powered units also need their cables, controls and emergency stop arrangements checked in line with the manufacturer's instructions. Record inspections where your workplace procedures require it.
When a conveyor is the right investment
A conveyor earns its place when van loading is frequent, repetitive and based on consistent carton or tote handling. It is especially useful where staff currently walk goods from a packing bench to the vehicle, or where the dispatch area becomes congested during collection times.
For occasional loading of mixed, awkward materials, a heavy-duty sack lorry or pallet-moving setup may offer better value and flexibility. It depends on the job. The best equipment is the one that removes the real bottleneck without adding a complicated process around it.
