For occasional short moves on a smooth floor, a manual model can still be the sensible, lower-cost choice. But where pallets move throughout the day, an electric unit can reduce operator fatigue, improve workflow and help teams handle demanding jobs with more control.
What an electric pallet lorry does
An electric pallet lorry lifts a pallet just clear of the floor using hydraulic forks, then uses a powered drive wheel to move it. The operator walks behind the lorry and controls direction, speed and braking from the handle. Most pedestrian models are designed for level, indoor use in warehouses, stockrooms, loading areas and production sites.
It is not a forklift replacement. An electric pallet lorry carries loads at floor level and is intended for horizontal transport. If you need to lift pallets onto racking, into vehicles at height or above waist level, you need different equipment, such as a stacker or forklift operated by properly trained staff.
The benefit is straightforward: the motor takes on the pulling and pushing. That is especially valuable when moving 500 kg to 2,000 kg pallets repeatedly over a shift. Operators can keep goods flowing without relying on brute force at every turn.

Capacity is the first figure most buyers see, but it needs to match the work rather than simply look impressive. Weigh or verify your heaviest typical pallet, including the pallet itself, wrapping and any stillages or packaging. Then consider how consistently that load is moved. A lighter load moved 80 times a day can be a harder working application than a heavier pallet moved once a week.
Fork dimensions matter just as much. Standard UK and Euro pallets commonly suit 1,150 mm fork lengths and 540 mm overall fork width, but pallet sizes vary between suppliers and industries. Also check the lowest pallet clearance. A pallet lorry cannot help if its fork profile will not pass beneath a damaged pallet, low stillage or unusual base. Poor pallets are a common cause of difficult handling, so do not assume every load is suitable simply because it is within the rated capacity.
Match the lorry to the route, not just the warehouse
A product specification tells only part of the story. Walk the route from collection point to destination and look at every surface, doorway and change in level. A powered pallet lorry works best on clean, firm, level floors with sufficient turning space.
Pay particular attention to:
- Thresholds, expansion joints and dock plates that can jolt the load or catch small wheels.
- Gradients, including loading ramps and sloped yard access.
- Narrow aisles, blind corners and doorways where pedestrians may cross.
- Damaged concrete, loose gravel, wet areas and uneven external ground.
Gradients need special care. Moving a loaded pallet downhill changes braking demands, while travelling uphill places more demand on the motor and battery. Never assume a stated capacity applies in exactly the same way on a ramp. Check the manufacturer guidance for grade limits, load direction and operating conditions before putting a lorry into service.
Choose the right battery for the shift
Battery type affects daily convenience, running time and the way your team manages the equipment. Many modern compact electric pallet lorries use lithium-ion batteries. They are popular because they charge relatively quickly, are lighter than traditional lead-acid systems and can often be topped up during breaks without the same maintenance requirements.
That suits businesses with intermittent work and limited space for battery handling. A removable battery can also be useful where a spare is available, allowing one pack to charge while another keeps the lorry working.
Lead-acid batteries may still suit some heavy-duty applications, particularly where equipment runs for extended periods and a dedicated charging area is available. They generally require more attention, including correct charging procedures and, depending on the battery, routine checks. The best option depends on duty cycle, budget and whether operators can charge equipment reliably.
Before buying, ask practical questions. How many pallets will move on a busy day? How far is each journey? Is there a safe mains supply close to the parking area? Can the lorry be charged overnight, or is it needed across multiple shifts? Battery runtime figures are useful, but real runtime falls when loads are heavy, floors are poor, temperatures are low or travel distances are long.
Safety is part of the buying decision
An electric pallet lorry makes movement easier, but it still carries serious weight. The operator needs a clear route, good visibility and control of the load at all times. The forks should be fully inserted beneath the pallet, with the load stable and centred where possible. Raise the pallet only enough to clear the floor, then travel with the load low.
Avoid fast turns, sudden changes of direction and travelling with unstable, overhanging or damaged loads. If the load blocks forward view, the operator should follow the safe procedure specified for the site and equipment, often travelling in a direction that maintains visibility while keeping clear of others.
Pedestrians are a major consideration. Warehouses, trade counters and back-of-house areas often combine people, stock and equipment in restricted space. Marked walkways, sensible speed controls, good lighting and clear communication all reduce risk. A horn, emergency stop, belly-button reverse switch and automatic braking are useful features, but they do not replace a careful operator.
Training should be proportionate to the equipment and workplace. Staff need to understand controls, daily checks, battery charging, the site traffic plan and what to do when a pallet shifts or a route is blocked. Managers should also make clear that an electric pallet lorry is not a ride-on vehicle and must not be used to carry people.
Daily checks keep work moving
A quick inspection before use can prevent a damaged wheel, leaking hydraulic system or weak battery from becoming a bigger problem mid-shift. Check the forks for cracks, bends and obvious wear. Look at the wheels and rollers for damage or trapped debris, then test the lift, lower, drive, brake, horn and emergency stop functions in a clear area.
Inspect the handle and control buttons, and make sure the battery is secure with no damaged connectors or cables. If anything affects safe use, take the lorry out of service until it has been checked and repaired. When a hand pallet lorry may still be better
Powered equipment is not automatically the right answer for every task. A hand pallet lorry is often simpler for low-frequency moves, short distances and small storage spaces. It has no battery to charge, is easy to keep ready for use and can be a practical backup when the main electric unit is unavailable.
The decision usually comes down to frequency and effort. If staff move only a few light-to-medium pallets over smooth flooring each week, manual handling equipment may be enough. If they are regularly pulling loaded pallets through a busy warehouse, across long internal routes or between workstations, electric drive starts to earn its place quickly.
For demanding daily handling, choose equipment around the hardest part of the job, not the easiest.
