A ladder that is nearly tall enough is not tall enough. Reaching sideways from the top steps, standing on a rung marked ‘do not stand’, or balancing on a windowsill turns a straightforward job into a fall risk. Knowing how to choose ladder height means measuring the job properly, allowing for safe standing position and choosing equipment built for the way you need to work.
The right answer is rarely just the height of the wall, gutter or roof edge. It depends on whether you are leaning the ladder, working from it, stepping off it and carrying tools. Get those details right before you buy or set up, and the job becomes safer, quicker and far less awkward.
Understand ladder height and working height
Product listings may show a ladder’s closed length, extended length, platform height or working height. They are useful figures, but they do not all mean the same thing.
Ladder length is the physical length of the ladder. On an extension ladder, this is usually its maximum extended length. On a stepladder, it is normally the height to the top platform or top step, depending on the design.
Working height is an estimate of the height a person can safely reach while standing in the correct position. It commonly allows roughly 1.5 to 2 metres above the standing level, but the exact figure varies by product and manufacturer. Treat it as a guide, not permission to stretch to the last centimetre.
The height you need is the height of the task, not simply the height of the building. If you are painting a ceiling, you need to reach the ceiling with both feet secure and your body between the ladder’s stiles. If you are cleaning a gutter, you need to work beside it without pulling yourself up onto the top rungs.
How to choose ladder height for the task
Start by measuring from the ground where the ladder will stand to the highest point you need to reach. Then decide how you will access that point.
For work carried out from the ladder, such as painting, drilling, changing signage or clearing gutters, choose a ladder that lets you work at a comfortable chest-to-shoulder height. You should not need to stand on the top cap of a stepladder or use the highest rungs of a leaning ladder. The usable standing level is lower than the ladder’s total height.
For access to a roof, loft platform, scaffold deck or raised landing, the ladder must extend above the step-off point. A general rule is at least 1 metre above the landing point, giving you something solid to hold while stepping on or off. Do not rely on a ladder that finishes level with the edge of the roof or platform.
A practical example: if a first-floor gutter is 4.5 metres from level ground, a 5-metre ladder may sound sufficient. But once it is positioned at the correct angle, and once you leave safe rungs at the top and bottom, it may be too short for comfortable gutter work. A longer extension ladder gives a safer working position and reduces the temptation to overreach.
Set leaning ladders at the right angle
A leaning ladder needs extra length because it does not stand vertically. The accepted setup is approximately a 75-degree angle, often described as the 1-in-4 rule: position the ladder’s base one unit out from the wall for every four units of vertical rise.
If the top support point is 4 metres high, the feet should sit about 1 metre away from the wall. That angle keeps the ladder stable and puts your weight through it as intended. Set too steep, and it can tip backwards. Set too shallow, and it is more likely to slip at the base or flex under load.
Measure the available ground space as well as the height. On a narrow pavement, beside a conservatory, or in a busy loading area, there may not be room to achieve a safe angle. In that case, a platform ladder, tower scaffold or another access method may be the better choice. Forcing a leaning ladder into a restricted space is not a workaround.
The top of a leaning ladder needs a firm, clean support point on both stiles. Avoid resting it on gutters, glazing, plastic cladding, loose boards or uneven brickwork. Secure the ladder where possible, keep the base on firm level ground and protect the area from people, vehicles and opening doors.
Choose the right height for a stepladder or platform ladder
Stepladders are ideal when there is no wall to lean against, such as fitting lights, decorating rooms, working in aisles or carrying out routine maintenance. Their stated platform height is the figure that matters most. Add your safe reach above the platform to judge whether it suits the work.
For prolonged tasks, a platform ladder is often the more sensible choice. A larger standing platform, guardrail and handhold can reduce fatigue and leave you in a more controlled position when using both hands. That matters when cutting in paint, installing cable tray or working repeatedly at one level.
Do not buy an extra-tall stepladder simply because it covers more jobs on paper. A ladder that is too tall can be harder to carry through doorways, awkward to position indoors and unnecessarily heavy for short tasks. It is often better to match the main job height, then use a second compact step ladder for lower work.
Never use a closed stepladder as a leaning ladder unless the manufacturer specifically states that the model is designed for it. Combination ladders can offer several configurations, but each mode has its own setup instructions and safe working limits.
Factor in the job, not just the measurement
The safest ladder height also depends on what you are doing while up there. A quick visual inspection needs less working space than two hours of drilling, wiring or painting. The more force, movement or equipment the task involves, the more valuable a stable platform and generous reach become.
Consider these practical factors before selecting a ladder:
- Frequency of use: Daily trade work calls for durable, convenient access equipment rather than the smallest ladder that occasionally reaches.
- Load and tools: Check the ladder’s duty rating and account for your body weight, clothing, tool belt and materials.
- Electrical work: Fibreglass ladders are the appropriate choice where electrical hazards may be present. Keep them clean, dry and inspected, and follow site procedures.
- Transport and storage: Measure your van, garage or storage area. A telescopic or multi-purpose ladder can save space, while a fixed ladder may be faster for regular use.
- Work environment: Wet grass, sloping drives, uneven paving and busy workplaces all affect whether a ladder is suitable at all.
Avoid the common height-selection mistakes
The most common mistake is choosing to the maximum reach rather than the safe standing height. If you must stand on the top two or three rungs to reach the job, the ladder is too short. If your hips are outside the stiles to reach sideways, move the ladder instead of stretching.
Another mistake is forgetting that ground level changes. A ladder that reaches comfortably from a flat patio may be too short or unstable on a sloping drive. Never prop one side on blocks, pallets or loose timber to make up the difference. Use appropriate levelling equipment where permitted by the manufacturer, or choose another access solution.
Finally, do not assume a roof job always means a longer ladder. Roof work carries additional risks, including fragile surfaces, weather exposure and difficult access. A ladder may be suitable for access only, while the work itself requires roof safety equipment, scaffolding or a professional access plan.
